Colonoscopy information in English

Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment.

It is important that you read all the information below as soon as possible and complete instructions for bowel preparation as advised.

1 week prior to the appointment please purchase PLENVU (or alternative bowel prep) and DULCOLAX TABS.

PLENVU can be made-up and chilled in the fridge for up to 6 hours before drinking

We recommend using PLENVU (alternatively CITRAFLEET or PICOPREP) as bowel prep (available at pharmacies without a prescription). To avoid perianal soreness, we recommend using an ointment to protect the anus during the bowel preparation.

7 days prior to the appointment, start eating a low fibre/low residue diet: no wholegrains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, or raw fruits or vegetables. Fruit juices, white bread, refined breakfast cereals, meat and dairy foods are allowed. Dark colouring in your bowel can lead to inaccuracies during the colonoscopy, so avoid drinking or eating anything coloured red or purple. Stop iron supplements.

3 and 2 days before appointment, take 2 DULCOLAX TABS.

The purpose of a colonoscopy is to look inside your large intestine (colon) for polyps, cancers, ulcers, and other conditions.
The doctor will pass a flexible tube through the anus and examine the colon. The tube has a small camera and a headlight which allows the doctor to see the inside of your colon on a TV monitor. The doctor can take biopsies of abnormal areas, and can also remove polyps. The examination usually takes less than half an hour. It may cause some discomfort. Occasionally relaxing medication may be necessary. If you need medication you cannot drive a car for the next 24 hours.

Bleeding is an uncommon complication of biopsies or polypecotomy in endoscopical procedures. If you experience this, please contact your doctor.

    Are you taking anticoagulant drugs?

You must notify us in advance if you are taking anticoagulant drugs.

Marevan/warfarin, Xarelto, Pradaxa or Eliquis if possible, should be stoppet two days before the examination. Please contact your "fastlege" if you are unsure if stopping the drug is safe for you.

If you are taking acetylsalicylic acid in addition to Brilique or Plavix, please check with your pysician if you can pause the medication.
